FRAMINGHAM — The Framingham Disability Commission voted to send a letter urging the state to hire two compliance officers for the Architectural Access Board, which members said now has none. ADA Coordinator David Correia reported the board has cycled through four or five compliance officers in 18 months and recently granted a disability-access variance to a Union Avenue law office over the commission's objection, saying "I was shocked" at the outcome. The letter will circulate to other commissions through a network organized by Mark Dempsey of the Metro West Center for Independent Living before going to state leadership.
Separately, the commission heard from new Parks and Facilities Director Jim Paolini on revising beach wheelchair rules, voted to support a roughly $500,000 Athenaeum Hall elevator funding request after costs rose from about $300,000 to $1 million, appointed Matthew Strumpf to a new Blue Ribbon Public Pool Commission, and advanced a draft automatic-door ordinance to the City Council.
