Framingham sports roundup, Aug. 17 to Aug. 23

FRAMINGHAM -- The City Council and Mayor Charlie Sositsky presented a joint proclamation this week celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Sudbury River Tennis Club, according to the Aug. 18 City Council meeting.

COMMUNITY -- The proclamation states the club was founded in 1926 and has served as "a cherished gathering place for the residents of Framingham and the neighboring communities" for a century. According to club vice president Donna Peruti, the club started in 1902 as part of the Framingham Country Club before breaking off in 1926 because members did not want to pay golf fees; the group then bought 38.9 acres on Edgeville Road for $2,000 and built four courts for about $3,000. Peruti said the club now ranks in the "top 5% oldest continuously operating tennis clubs in the United States," according to USTA research the club conducted. The proclamation also recognized former club manager Warren Kindred for 42 years of service, noting that Court 1 has been named in his honor. A club representative told the council the facility recently added lights, which he called "very helpful for the tennis community."

YOUTH LEAGUES -- Framingham Youth Hockey Program's website lists a "Mandatory Managers Meeting" scheduled for Sept. 3, 2026, at the Elks Club, 450 Union Ave., running from 7 to 9 p.m., according to the program's events calendar.
