Framingham library program marks 40 years of adult literacy work
The City of Framingham announced that Literacy Unlimited, the Framingham Public Library's adult literacy program, is marking 40 years of service with a Nov. 19 celebration at Nevins Hall, with tickets available for $40.
The City of Framingham announced Oct. 19 that Literacy Unlimited, the Framingham Public Library's adult literacy program, is celebrating 40 years of helping adults improve their English, reading and writing skills.
Established in 1986, Literacy Unlimited provides free adult literacy and language education to residents of Framingham and surrounding MetroWest communities. The program is an affiliate of Literacy Volunteers of Massachusetts and offers individualized English and literacy tutoring, English conversation classes, and citizenship preparation.
During fiscal year 2025, the program served more than 500 adult learners through individual tutoring and group conversation classes, supported by more than 170 volunteers who served as tutors, trainers, class leaders, workshop facilitators and Foundation board members. Volunteers donated more than 10,000 hours of time, and the program helped 248 individuals register for library cards.
Framingham Public Library Director Dawn Dellasanta said in a statement, "For 40 years, Literacy Unlimited has demonstrated the extraordinary impact that public libraries can have beyond their books and buildings." Literacy Unlimited Coordinator Martha Coleman said in a statement, "Our 40th anniversary is a celebration of everyone who has been part of that journey."
The milestone will be marked Thursday, Nov. 19, at historic Nevins Hall in the Memorial Building in Framingham. The event, hosted by the Literacy Unlimited of Framingham Foundation, will include live music, catered hors d'oeuvres, student and volunteer speakers, and a live fundraising appeal. The Foundation has set a $40,000 fundraising goal in honor of the anniversary.
Tickets cost $40 and can be reserved through the event's ticket page. Organizers ask that tickets be reserved by Friday, Nov. 6.
Those interested in volunteering with the program can find information on the program's volunteer page.
