City Council Ad Hoc Special Committee · Meeting of August 6, 2026
Framingham's Ad Hoc Special Committee voted 3-0 to recommend merging the Callahan Center into the library and combining Parks and Recreation with Facilities Management. Chief Financial Officer Brian Turbitt told councilors the two eliminated director positions carried a combined salary of about $260,000, but said net savings will likely come in "in excess of $200,000" once roughly four job descriptions are revised. Resident Herb Chasen, 87, opposed the plan, citing a 901-signature petition and warning it creates "overload" on the library director.
Friends of Callahan president Mary McGill and board member Steve Kiviet countered with accounts of improved morale and expanded programming at the senior center. Mayor Charlie said veterans services was dropped from the current proposal due to a legal-notice omission and will return as a separate future item. The order heads to the City Council's August 18 meeting for final action.
