Framingham School Committee Votes 8-1 to Cut 31 More Positions, Adopt $187.2 Million Budget

FRAMINGHAM -- June 3, 2026, Framingham School Committee adopts $187.2 million FY27 budget after 248-day process, cutting 31 more positions. The committee voted 8-1 Wednesday to accept Superintendent Robert Tremblay's recommended reductions to close a $3,239,420 gap between the school committee's approved budget and the mayor's funding level, with Member Adam Freudberg the lone dissenter. Executive Director of Finance Lincoln Lynch told the committee that of the 31 positions, nine are reductions of filled roles, six are transfers within the district, and the rest are vacancies or non-reappointments; he projected a $500,000 FY26 surplus carryover and $417,232 in additional Circuit Breaker reimbursement to reduce the gap before the position cuts take effect. FTA President Chris Mulroney warned from the podium that the reductions are "concentrated entirely in student-facing positions" and that new state seclusion and timeout requirements taking effect in September demand more capacity, not less. The committee separately voted 9-0 to formally request the mayor and city council restore $1.2 million to the school budget, preserving student-facing positions, before the city council's second budget reading scheduled for June 16.
